The hotel was very nice and great for kids...tons of activities. The room was very spacious except the bathroom was very ... small. The housekeeping was below my expectation (spilled toothpaste on the shower entry and spent all week with it). Plan on going out to eat the tavern food was terrible. It was also quite expensive. I did not eat at the main restaurant (food comes from the same kitchen and did not want to risk it).

My review of Carefree Resort & Villas
Sandra, Ft. Worth Oct 25, 2008
The staff at the Carefree Inn was neither helpful nor friendly. The desk clerk was quite abrupt during my check-in. Since I ... was there on for business, my bags were quite heavy with my laptop, scanner, printer, etc. Since I wasn't using the valet parking, I had to carry my own bags. After I'd moved them from the parking lot to the door...alone, I was allowed to borrow one of their carts to move them the rest of the way. On the way to my room, I encountered an extremely steep ramp & knew I could not manage the cart alone. I went back to the lobby/valet area and finally found a young man to help me down the ramp....he almost fell himself.
There were a number of golf courses in the area.

nice place
Evan, Henderson Oct 17, 2008
This hotel is very nice and a great look at the Arizona desert - which is lovely. We had good luck at the hotel although ... they upgraded us to a room with 2 queen beds. That was a negative for us as we did not have time to fuss with asking to be moved to a different room. Then when we showered, we found there was only one towel in the bathroom and one washcloth. That was not good. The balcony had a big cigar butt on the ground, it appeared the cleaning crew was a little too laid back at that point. The staff was very nice though and very helpful - great people work there.
Eat at the Bad Donkey for your salad, sandwich, pizza, or beer and ice cream! A great place with great people. The guy behind the bar is a crazy guy with lots of stories to tell. The place is run by a bunch of crazies who are always havin' fun.

Downtown Carefree has some excellent dining choices and the town looks like a great place to explore. Nearby nature trails can also be fun. Too bad I didn't have more time for the exploration.

Spur Cross Stables was great and a short drive away.

Many quaint shops and restaurants within a short drive. Also, if just relaxing is upper most in your agenda, try the bar on the property. The drinks are reasonable, the peanuts are free, and there are enough TV screens to appease any sports fanatic.

It's a little ways out
Barry, Kirkland, WA Oct 3, 2008
I wasn't aware of how far out the location was. It tooki me 30 minutes on surface streets. There are no chain restaurants ... very close. However, the Inn is a beautiful facility. There is one nice restaurant and one sports bar on property. The pool and workout room are exceptional. I went for a run, and the desert scenery and wildlife (roadrunners, rabbits, butterflies) were great. I might take the drive and stay there again.
This is in the foothills outside of Scottsdale. I get the feeling that there are lots of mountain attractions very close.

You have to get one of the villas if you stay at carefree. There Huge, beautiful, and private. With only four villas per ... building and gated access the whole property is very secluded and there's a great spa to relax in with your other half. Hit the Red Horse for great burgers and strong drinks and throw a few peanut shells on the floor. this place is great to gettaway from phoenix..
THE Red Horse you'll love it kick back on a couch and enjoy the game someone will be by frequently to refill your glass.

Wonderful for the Whole Family
Anonymous, Chicago Jun 12, 2008
The Carefree Villas was an excellent stay for our family. We had 5 adults and 4 children and the Grand Villa was ... superb!!!! I, the grandma, stayed in a separate hotel room about 2 blocks away and as it was comfortable and extremely scenic, it did get pretty noisy in the evening and throughout the night. My ONLY complaint. We all had the most memorable vacation. The staff was helpful, pleasant and friendly.

I loved the amenities that were available to me, shuttle to other restaurants. The room and bed were very comfortable, which ... enable me to have a good nights sleep. I had a great time, everyone was very professional but friendly.

The 1 Bedroom Villa with a full kitchen and 2 bathrooms was extremely large and comfortable for a one-week stay. The staff ... was excellent in accommodating our requests. The washer/dryer are conveniently located just outside the apartment door. The main restaurant food and service were excellent. We loved being in the Carefree area and plan to stay there again.

it was a nice resort, but i'll know what to look for next time.
Adina May 28, 2007
In my opinion the resort offered a lot of activities that required people to be out in the elements during some of the ... hottest times of the day. The activities would have been great if not for the intense heat. For a visitor to the state of Arizona it was to hot for horseback riding, tennis, basically any rigorous outside activities. With that said the room was nice, it offered enough space for two people. The staff were friendly especially as you are coming toward them ,because it appeared that their congenial smile left as they walked on past you.It seemed robotic. I did indulge in the spa treatment, but it seemed as though they got a little backed up with clients, but the massage was an adventure in relaxation!Evening activities were very kid friendly, movies by the pool, but they charged for the s'mores COME ON!Get rid of Valet parking for a lot that is the distance equal to the walk across the street for tennis, and you can give s'mores away. With all of the physical activities ,one can walk the parking lot. There was a glass blowing art demonstration class, but for a resort it needed more inside recreational activities.I would have paid more money for an inclusive staff lead and guide yourself actvities. that were arts and crafts, yoga based, appropriately timed outside activities, tours of a town larger than three blocks.

Really be aware of what type of resort you are looking for. It's great if you have the endurance of a camel and can withstand mid morning temperatures in the high 90's. I did enjoy my own journey to the Grand Canyon. A mere three hour drive in one direction:)

A Vintage Arizona Resort
Kalvin May 27, 2007
If you want to stay at an resort that reflects what one would experience in the 60s or 70s this is the destination for you. ... This was my wife and my second stay at the Carefree Resort. The desert setting is magnificent. The town of Carefree has the feel of a resort community without becoming over the top touristy (see Sedona). Carefree with its unique restaurants and shops is less than 10 minutes from the resort. At the Carefree resorts all of the facilities are nice although they sometimes show the wear and tear of their age. My wife played tennis at the resorts courts and used the workout facilities and had praise for both. The room itself was very spacious but nothing special. Probably comparable to most midprice hotel/motels. The room was perfectly comfortable though.
The Mexican food restaurant is primo!!!
