Terrible Room
Anonymous Sep 29, 2008
The room was extremely small with just a conventional double-bed and there was not a single chair in the room. The carpeting ... was old and stained and the furnishings were sparse. The single window was almost completely blocked by a hutch and the controls for the air-conditioner were out of reach behind the hutch. The hallways were dark and dismal. They reminded one of an old institution like a sanitorium.
Convenient to Penn RR Station; it is right across the street.

Incredibly outdated-waste of money.
Orlando Aug 27, 2008
All in all, Hotel Pennsylvannia was a huge disappointment. The room and bathroom were incredibly outdated, to the point you ... feared filth, and made yourself walk and shower at all times in flip flops. The window in our room was stuck open and could not be shut, even though we called and requested maintenance; the amentities and great hospitality would have been noticed had there been more than two pillows on the king size bed, or had the hair dryer actually been mounted on the wall.

TERRIBLE
Julie Aug 22, 2008
This was the most horrific nightmare. The closet couldn't be opened because it was blocked by the nightstand. There were no ... outlets in the bathroom and the mirror was hanging on by a very thin thread. The carpet was brown and stained everywhere, and NONE of the fixtures / furniture had seemingly ever been replaced. The hairdryer was kept in the closet which thank goodness I'm skinny and could squeeze in to find it... and I had to plug it in in by the bed because there were no outlets in the bathroom, and it sparked! I would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy!

Great Location/Average hotel
Anonymous, Washington, DC Jul 30, 2008
The Hotel Pennsylvania is only steps from Penn Station and the heart of New York City. The hotel is just fine if you don't ... plan on spending too much time there. The rooms are kind of smelly, but otherwise okay, if a little small. I had no problem checking in, but every other time I passed the front desk, there was a huge line. The front desk did not answer my phone call when I called to get a wakeup call.
It's the middle of New York. It's near everything.

DISAPPOINTED
Amber, Borger, * Jul 24, 2008
I REALIZE THAT DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU TRAVEL, YOU MAY HAVE TO PAY A LITTLE MORE. HOWEVER, WHEN YOU PAY AS MUCH AS WE DID, I ... AT LEAST EXPECT TO HAVE AN AIR CONDITIONER WITH WORKING KNOBS THAT YOU CAN TURN TO YOUR DESIRED TEMPERATURE. I ALSO EXPECT, WHEN THE HOTEL KNOWS THAT YOU HAVE TWO PEOPLE STAYING IN ONE BED, TO HAVE A BED BIG ENOUGH TO FIT TWO PEOPLE IN IT..... NEITHER MY HUSBAND OR MYSELF ARE BIG PEOPLE AND WE WERE TOO BIG TO BE SHARING THAT TINY BED. I ALSO EXPECT THE HOTEL STAFF TO BE AT LEAST A LITTLE FRIENDLY WHEN WE ARE PAYING THEM TO STAY THERE. NOT SO THE CASE! THE LADY THAT CHECKED US IN WAS EXTREMELY RUDE AND INTERRUPTED CONSTANTLY WHEN TRYING TO ANSWER HER QUESTIONS. WE WERE TOLD THAT IF WE HAD ANY QUESTIONS ON HOW TO GET SOMEWHERE WHILE IN NEW YORK TO ASK BELLHOPS AT HOTEL AND THEY WERE ALWAYS ON THE PHONE & ACTED VERY INCONVENIENCED TO HAVE TO TALK TO US. WE ABSOLUTELY LOVED NEW YORK & WILL GO BACK, BUT WILL STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE NEXT TIME.
THERE IS HOWEVER A VERY WONDERFUL IRISH PUB CALLED THE BLARNEY ROCK RIGHT ACROSS 33RD STREET FROM HOTEL. BARTENDER IS REALLY FROM IRELAND & EXTREMELY FRIENDLY. WARNING: THERE IS NOWHERE IN NEW YORK TO GET ALCOHOL WITHOUT PAYING AN ARM & A LEG!!!!

Great Location
Anonymous, York, PA Jul 16, 2008
The hotel was very clean and the staff was very helpful in suggesting the best way to see as many sights during our visit. ... The room was well kept although the shower was small but the water pressure in the shower was great. The hotel is in a great location directly across from Penn Station and close the central New York so it is very easy access to get to most of where we wanted to be. I would suggest a more economy priced restaurant on sight, the hotel restuarant was nice but our breakfast there cost more than our dinners out throughout the city.

If you are coming by train this is the best hotel as far as convenience and they will check your luggage before your room is ready and on your day of departure so you are still free to get out and do things without worrying about your luggage.

The overall stay at the hotel was wonderful. It started off rocky but the staff was more than willing to help with the issue. ... First room the key didn't work. We were move to a larger newly remodeled room. Day two the air was quiet a cool as it should be so instead of working on it they moved us up to a suite for the next five nights. Again they were wonderful and more that willing to work to make our stay as wonderful as possible.

MIHAI, COSTA MESA May 26, 2008
Hotel Penn is perfectly located: a couple of blocks from times square, a couple of blocks from the empire state bldg. ... Plenty of eating opportunities for all tastes and $$$ around the hotel. The room was decent - not the best room I have ever been in, but decent as far as basic amenities go. I definetly recommend this hotel, specially if you are a budget traveler. Let's face, you will not find a better value in Manhattan.

Never again....
Dianna May 10, 2008
Hotel Pennsylvania was very close to Madison Square Garden which was the purpose for this trip, unfortunately it was a very ... bad experience. First stepping foot into the hotel, it was dirty looking, old and they were doing some type of remodeling. The front desk staff was rude and didn't want to help nor answer any questions. Upon checking into the room, you could hear banging of the walls and a constant drilling noise from 2pm-5pm, so don't think you are going to take a nap during this time. For claiming one of the largest hotels in new york city, I had no view and the window was broken and wouldn't shut so I heard cars honking all night. Try telling the staff about this and you'll get ignored. Then there was the shower....it leaked the entire time we were there. Not just a small drip or two every once in a while, a lot of hot water ran constantly out of the broken faucet, enough to steam up the mirror. Don't bother telling the manager about this problem either, they didn't care. I would never stay there again!

A/C didn't work
Dawn, Orlando, FL Apr 4, 2008
With 12 elevator banks, access to room was great. Good place if you're travelling alone without a discriminating spouse ... accustomed to, and demanding of, 5 star facilities. Air conditioning consisted of an open window which was a problem the 1st nite. I was told it hadn't been turned on yet due to the season. The unit didn't appear to have been working for a considerable period of time so if you're expecting a room where you determine the comfort, you may want to call first. Very good location and the staff was exceptional. Room was clean and linens were good.
If travelling alone with carry on take subway from airport to hotel(within a couple of blocks or so). D train to Yankee Stadium. M20 bus to Ground Zero(can also catch subway). Walk to Times Sqyare, less than a mile.
